"The Black Album" to jeden z największych sukcesów komercyjnych i artystycznych wszech czasów. Po premierze w 1991 album zatytułowany po prostu "Metallica" zapewnił grupie #1 w co najmniej 10 krajach, w tym cztery tygodnie z rzędu na szczycie list sprzedaży w USA. Single "Enter Sandman", "The Unforgiven", "Nothing Else Matters", "Wherever I May Roam" oraz "Sad But True" rozbrzmiewały w każdej stacji radiowej i telewizyjnej.

Album spotkał się nie tylko z ciepłym przyjęciem fanów, ale też krytyków. Regularnie, aż do dziś, ukazuje się na przeróżnych podsumowaniach najlepszych albumów wszech czasów. W ciągu 30 ostatnich lat nie było wydawnictwa w tym gatunku, które pobiłoby rekordy sprzedaży czarnego albumu.
